Sozopol - a small, romantic maritime town with typical Bulgarian architecture, situated 35 km. south of Bourgas. It is the oldest settlement on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The city is famous for its Festival of Arts "Apollonia", which is held in the beginning of September and brings the ancient name of the city. Very popular are the architectural monuments because of which the Old Town of Sozopol is proclaimed an archaeological museum. Ancient necropolis of Apollonia Pontica and priceless religious possessions of the city attract tourists from around the world.

 

On July 28, 2010 during archaeological excavations on the St. Ivan near Sozopol were found relics of the first saint in Christianity - John the Baptist. Baptist of the Lord is among the most revered saints in the world, not only by Christians but also by Muslims. Relics of the saint are scattered across three continents and thousands of believers flocking each year to worship them. On August 5, 2010 Bulgarian government officially transmit the relics of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Today the relics are kept in the cathedral of Sozopol named "St. George", which previously possessed a piece of the Holy Cross and the relics of St. Andrew.

 

 

Weather

The most active time of the year for the city is from early May to mid-October, when tourists from all over the world visit Sozopol to enjoy the weather, sandy beaches, history, culture and religious treasures of the city, diverse cuisine (Bulgarian, Greek, Turkish) and colorful atmosphere of the resort.
